5 Supplements For Gut Health

Whether you suffer from IBS or not, we have  all encountered uncomfortable stomach problems at some point in our lives. Luckily there are many supplements that can help promote gut health and digestion, and that can even relieve symptoms of conditions such as IBS, let’s look at a few!

Probiotics

Did you know that the human body consists of more bacterial cells than human cells? (mind. blown.) Probiotics can be defined as living microorganisms that are beneficial to health! Bacteria found in our bodies are important not only in digesting foods and protecting us from pathogens, but even synthesising vitamins, who knew?! Taking a probiotic supplement can help restore our gut microbiome and aid digestion, and they have also been found to help relieve IBS symptoms such as bloating. Another fun fact: probiotics are so teeny tiny that you can fit millions of them in a little tablet - how cute!

Psyllium Husk

Psyllium husks are the husks of psyllium seeds! They are rich in soluble fibre, specifically a gel-forming fibre that absorbs water which can help soften or bulk stool. Because of its ability to help provide bulk or soften stools, it is considered a natural laxative and can help relieve constipation by easing bowel movements! Psyllium Husk is normally sold in the form of powder, capsules or tablets.

Ginger

Ginger has been used for centuries as a natural remedy to help with nausea and vomiting, and there are many studies to confirm its effectiveness too. The main bioactive compounds in ginger are gingerols, and they are thought to be responsible for the benefits as well as the distinct smell and taste of ginger. Ginger has also been found to aid digestion by increasing the rate of gastric emptying. It can also be used to settle an unsettled stomach and helps relieve symptoms such as motion or morning sickness - try chewing on some Turmeric & Ginger gummies to help you next time you’re feeling a little nauseous!

Digestive Enzymes

Digestive enzymes are essential in breaking down components of food we eat. Lactase for instance breaks down lactose found in milk and dairy products, and is what individuals with lactose intolerance are missing! Protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase help us digest carbohydrates, fats and protein. Taking a digestive enzyme supplement such as MOBU Digezyme before your meals can help break down food and ultimately help better utilise the nutrients in food, and may also improve IBS symptoms in the process!

Activated Charcoal

Although activated charcoal is commonly used as an emergency poison treatment, it is also used to help with bloating! Activated charcoal is a porous powder that is not digested in the gut, it travels through the digestive system unchanged, and has the ability to bind to and trap gases in the digestive system. This can help reduce flatulence and bloating!
