What Are Avocados?

Avocado is a fruit that is native to Mexico and Central America, and is important in traditional Mexican, Central American and South American cuisine. Avocados are covered in a thick dark green skin, and contain a smooth and creamy edible fruit, as well as a golfball sized seed.

Avocados contain essential nutrients such as vitamin C, E, K, B2, B3, B5, B6, folate, magnesium, copper and manganese. They are a source of healthy fats, and they are also low in carbohydrates. They even contain more potassium than bananas, and one avocado, depending on its size, will generally contain about half the recommended daily intake of fibre!

Because of their high fibre and healthy fat content, avocados can promote satiety and help us feel fuller after a meal - this can help prevent overeating and promote weight loss. The fibre content is also beneficial for digestion and gut health, and promotes the growth of gut healthy bacteria. They are also packed with antioxidants which can help reduce inflammation.

Avocados are high in oleic acid, which is a monounsaturated fat that has been shown to be beneficial in reducing the risk of chronic conditions. One meta-analysis found that diets rich in avocados resulted in lower levels of LDL cholesterol - high levels of LDL cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Avocados also contain lutein, which is an antioxidant that is naturally found in out eyes and is essential for eye health as it may reduce the risk of age-related eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Avocados are nutrient dense fruits that are rich in fibre, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. Including avocados as part of a varied and balanced diet can offer a range of health benefits, from cardiovascular health to digestion.
